What existed in Hayes Valley before the 1989 earthquake? All I can find on the web was that there was a freeway there, which, when it fell, created a new neighborhood. And that they Hayes family owned a lot of land there. What was there before the freeway? Before the Hayes family owned it? Any links to this neighborhood's history would be very helpful.
