prolapse in older doe?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Hi I just got a 10 yr old Nigerian Dwarf doe. She is doe in about 2 weeks. The last week she has been having a small prolapse but we have been cleaning in in a warm water w/ iodine solution then putting some tripple antibiotic ointment on it and using ice cubes to help the swelling to shrink and it usually goes in on its own. The last 2 days the swelling has not gone down and the prolapse has not gone back inside. it is getting dried and yucky looking. it is out about 3 to 4 inches. She eats, drinks and walks around alot so I guess she feels ok. I notice she strains alot when she needs to urinate as it has a hard time passing this ball of flesh hanging out. We don't have much money and the vet wants me to bring her in to fix it and sew her up or something... I will do that if I have to but just wanted to see if there was anything I could do first. Also, Will she be able to kid normally with having a prolapse problem or will it kill her and the kids.. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

I'm no expert on prolapses, but I do read James Herriot (country vet stories). In one story, (and these are true stories) he used sugar to shrink it down and get the swelling down, then rinsed it off and put it back in. I've no idea if it works or not, but that came to mind when reading your problem. I do know that if it gets put back in properly, it won't come out again and that she would be fine for breeding. As long as it gets fixed, she or the kids shouldn't have problems.
