Why is a single Bit Torrents file 6.88 Gb??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Community Anime Reviews : One Thread

Well I know why the file is so big...it has 36 avi files in it. My question is why make it so large to begin with?

I am sure there are reasons to package the older files as a single large bit torrent format yet it seems that there should be some better judgement on the size.

I have a high speed connection and a good computer system. Yet the time frame to download 6.88 Gb of avi data is over a week.

I don't know very much about the reasons why people might choose to make the bitorrent so large. I can only assume that there are reasons for that choice.

I'd be interested in finding out.

I'd also like to suggest the if you do have to make such a large file...please rename the episodes with the same format. It's very hard to view the episodes in the right order if episode #41 gets downloaded before episode #26. In my current download that file gets loaded in the middle...the numbering sequence is important and it's not hard to change the file and still give credit for the sub groups.

Please understand...I am VERY glad these files are avaible at all. I really raise my hat to to the folks who work so hard to do the sub's and set up the torrents we all enjoy.

I guess I really wanted to say to the folks who make the torrent files that it would help out a lot to keep the files samller.

I have found the 3 to 5 episodes per torrent worked out pretty well.

Again I don't know the restrictions that those making the torrents face...I am only saying what I'd like to see.

well wouldn't you like to get an entire series or season within 1 week, or spend over 2 months looking for the episodes individually. Not to mention trying to get reasonable quality. with a 6.88gb size, you are ASSURED to get hight quality and ALL the eps that you want. soo, it's your choice...

With the program azureus you can download the files individual in big torrents which can save you time especially if you saw some of the episodes already

yes, I did choose to download...I did not want to search every single database for them. So I was glad to have a single source to download from. Yet most times those same sources create a smaller download torrent. They will contain 6 to 10 files and will have the files correctly ordered with a consistant file name format. I happened to hit the one exception to the norm...so well done to those hard working sub groups, I really appreciate all the hard work.

TorrentStorm which I use to download bittorrents will also allow some choice for which files of the bittorrent to download by asigning a priority to that file that you can change.

However in this very large torrent that choice was ineffective. You could make the first avi of the episodes a priority and download them in order yet the file was not viewable untill the system could reach that memory block. I can only make guesses as to why it was so. I tried a number of ways to get the files at least in the correct playing order and failed to be able to do so.

It was very disapointing to have to wait for 13 files to download untill you could view the beggining of the episodes. Other files I have downloaded, quite a lot BTW, with the file names sequenced correctly have not had this problem.

Still I am glad to have the files, perhaps this can serve as a heads up to those creating those files to be careful with size and naming conventions. With all the work that goes into creating these subs it seems a shame to let these files be distributed without a bit more care.

Again I am still curious why this torrent was made so large. I will have to give Azureus a try...sounds like a good way to handle these large files.

I think you already answered your own questions. The point of creating a large torrent is to ensure that people don't have to search elsewhere for the remaining files. The additional benefit is that the bigger the torrent is, the longer it lasts.
