Built in 1910 by Elevator Specialty Co

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

I'm working in a building with an old girl from 1910, controlled by a steel rope looped over a phase reverser to operate. This is a great system, however we're looking for some type of handle for use in the car as putting a hand through into the shaft to operate the cable bothers some people. The handle would have to bring the rope under tension, move it about 8" up or down then release and allow free passage of the rope as the car moves. Any help locating something means a couple of beers. Cheers.

I've never seen anything like what you are looking for, time to upgrade, or stay with it.

You have a pull rope elevatro equipped with an Angell Lock device. There should be stop balls mounted to the wire rope which pass through a unit with retractable metal barriers. I do not believe this can be replaced with a car switch handle type device. Angell manufacturing was located in Massachusetts and has been out of business for many years.
