The NAACP, Our Youth, and the President

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

Lately I've been thinking about the disconnect between President Bush and the NAACP. One of the NAACP leaders suggested that President Bush could reach out to young black voters through the NAACP. For the past twenty-odd years I have considered the NAACP has not been able to attract the young black population because the organization does not have an agenda that addresses the problems they face today. What are your thoughts?

For someone who grew up in Compton 19 years among African Americans I noticed the NAACP lost its appeal starting around 1984.

Michael Jordan, Michael jackson, Magic Johnson, Lionel Ritchie, Rap, even Cosby from the Cosby show received such acceptance on TV among all ethnic groups that everyone believed that integration for African Americans was a done deal.

In the 1990s the March on Washington by Farrakhan was the final blow.
