[Some spiritual advice from St. Alphonse de Liguori:]

"We must show charity towards the sick, who are in greater need of help. Let us take them some small gift if they are poor, or, at least, let us go and wait on them and comfort them."
"If we would be saved and become saints, we ought always to stand at the gates of the Divine mercy to beg and pray for, as an alms, all that we need."
"He who does not acquire the love of God will scarcely persevere in the grace of God, for it is very difficult to renounce sin merely through fear of chastisement."
"When we hear people talk of riches, honors and amusements of the world, let us remember that all things have an end, and let us then say: 'My God, I wish for you alone and nothing more.'"
"He who receives Communion most frequently will be freest from sin, and will make farthest progress in Divine Love."

St. Alphonsus is my very favorite saint and I really looked forward to Mass this morning. He has stirred my heart with his writings of love and affection for Jesus. I wear his medal, carry his card, and have many of his books. I highly recommend "Preparation for Death" and "The Passion and Death of Jesus." He also is known for his scrupulosity, which I also suffer from. MaryAnn

Hello,Maryann. Thank you for sharing that. Now I am going to look up that great Saint. :-) God bless you

David -- August 01, 2002.

Amen maryann

He is a great saint. I have a couple of books of various compiled writings of his. One is on his spiritual writings Alphonsus de Liguori (The Classics of Western Spirituality) and one on his writings concerning the Eucharist. His writing helps me.

He and his order is especially known for their writing and printing efforts for the spread of the Gospel.

He also continued to help the poor when he had severe arthritis that crippled him. Toward the end of his life he sometimes had to eat through a straw because his body and neck area was twisted with arthritis but he still helped the poor when ill. SO pray to him for those with arthritis, ask him to help them keep their faith and not get discouraged.

Wow, a year passed since I posted about my love for St. Alphonsus. Today was a great day for me - First Friday and the feast day of my favorite St. Alphonsus. That man brings tears to my eyes when I read his affections for God. He suffered during his life and I also have a great love for the elderly which makes him so dear to me. And his plea to God, "Oh my God make me a saint" is so moving. A great day to go to Mass and receive Jesus. MaryAnn
