On August 23, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Rose of Lima [Rosa] (Peruvian, virgin, Dominican tertiary, died at about age 31 in 1617 [beatified 1668, canonized 1671])

St. Apollinaris of Reims (French, executioner, converted from paganism, martyred by beheading in 290) St. Ascelina of Boulancourt (French, Cistercian nun, mystic, d. 1195)
Sts. Astericus, Claudius, Neon, Domnina, and Theonilla, of Cilicia (from Asia Minor [now called Turkey] ... three biological brothers and two women ... martyred [four scourged to death, one burned to death with live coals] in 303)
St. Ebbe the Younger and companions, of Coldingham (Scottish, abbess and her nuns, martyred [burned in convent] by Norse pirates in 870)
St. Flavian of Autun (French, bishop, 7th century)
Bl. Francis Dachtera of Salno [Franciszek] (Polish, diocesan priest, martyred by Nazis at Dachau [Germany] at age 33 in 1944 [beatified 1999])
St. Hilarinus of Saint-Seine (French, Benedictine monk, martyred in 731)
Bl. James Bianconi of Mevania [Giacomo] (Italian, Dominican friar, died at about age 81 in 1301 [beatified 1672])
St. Lupicinus of Verona (Italian, bishop, 5th century)
St. Lupus (slave, early martyr)
Sts. Minervius, Eleazar, and eight children, of Lyons (French, family, martyred in 3rd century)
St. Philip Benizi of Florence [Filippo] (Italian, nobleman, doctor of medicine and philosophy, Servite priest and superior, healer, died at age 52 in 1285 [beatified 1645, canonized 1671])
Sts. Quiriacus, Maximus, Archelaus, and companions, of Ostia (Italian ... bishop, priest, deacon, and flock ... martyred in 235)
Sts. Restitutus and fifteen companions, of Antioch (Syrian [and North African?], martyred in 305)
St. Theonas of Alexandria (Egyptian, bishop, d. 300)
St. Tydfil (Welsh, daughter of a prince, martyred in 480)
St. Victor of Vita (Tunisian, bishop of Carthage or Utica, d. 535)
St. Zacchaeus of Jerusalem (Palestinian, patriarch [bishop], d. 116)
