Why do so many huge ancient sculptures have their noses off?

Interestingly the bit of the Sphynx that Napoleon's cannons shot off was the nose. As an aside on penises, I remember wondering the first time I saw a small sulpture of Pan sold at a suvenir shop. I thought, how hillarious it would be if the people placing it they had to handle it from the bit upfront. And yep, that's where the clerk picked it up from when I asked to see it:)

and penises? because they are fragile and stick out so they're the first to get chipped off - duh!
