becoming piano teachergreenspun.com : LUSENET : Everything About Teaching and Learning the Piano : One Thread
if i am 40 years old and have been taking piano lessons for only a year, is it feasible for me to someday become a piano teacher, assuming of course that i practice many, many hours each week, for several years. (i'm a stay-at- home mom and both of my kids are in school full time, so i have plenty of time.) Do you think it's possible after about 4 years? Or am I dreaming?! Even if I'm too old to ever think about teaching, I still love learning piano and will continue to do so. Thanks!

yes, definately judy! just remember to set goals, know what you need to teach, and never give up! get and study as many books as possible in all different areas to expandyour range. (jazz, blues, chords techniques etc.)

Sure you can, depending upon your course of study.
Are you studying classical piano, or the "chord"/"pro piano" method? The latter is much easier and faster to become proficient in. I have even seen people outfit an old schoolbus with several keyboards, and in effect operate a mobile piano class--as an indie contractor under the local community's park and recreation umbrella.
Imho, if you want to teach classical piano, serious piano students (as opposed to those learning just for recreation--never a bad reason to learn an instrument, mind you, but there is a much different attitude towards practice, for example--will want to see some type of "credentials".

Don't forget lots and lots of lessons. Perhaps two hours per week. One lesson for your level, and one lesson for pedagogy.
