GR-D90U Lens Cap Error

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dirck Halstead : One Thread

I've had my camera for about 10 months and now everytime I turn it on I get a Lens Cap error. The lens cap is removed and I've tried resetting the camera. Before taking it to a JVC Service Center is there anything I could try?

I have problem in JVC camcorder JVC GR-D90U purchased last october. I am having trouble getting a picture on my camcorder. When I turn it on I only see black through the lens and/or through the screen. It looks like the cap is still on the lens. Constantly gives the lens cap warning in automatic and manual modes. Will only record sound. LCD is black with only the warning message.

I bougth my GR-D50 in July 2003, and now I have the same problem (the "lens cap" message is on the lcd display all the time, with no possibility of recording).

I´m afraid I must go to a JVC service center, but I have seen several more cases after browsing the web.

any clues out there?

good luck, anyway

I had the same problems. I searched internet and found so many people has the same problem. I sent email to the JVC service center, will let you know their answer.

I also have the same problem with a GR-sxm250u. no image in record mode and blinking lens cap warning. unit is one year old, and fault occurred while camera was in its case with no battery attatched!!.put it away working, took it out broke!! only thing that changed is that it passed it's warranty expiration date. I think the ccd has failed but i havent recorded any more than two hours of tape, you would think they could make a device that will last more than two hours before failure!! REM

I have gotten the same issue. it sat on my tripod with no usage for several months and wheni go to turn it on it looks like the lense cap is on completely black. what is up with that. I have never dropped this thing?

I have sent the following email from the jvc.com web site:

============================

Hi,

I am JVC customers who purchase a GR-D50 digital video camera. Recently it gives me a "lens cap" error with a black screen while the cap is actually off. After some research of this problem from the internet I found this is quite common across different JVC’s models. See: http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00CMiv

Unfortunately it happens just a few days after its one year warranty which mean I can't take it back to the service center.

I am dissatisfying with JVC's digital video camera specifically its reliability. I demand an explanation of this "lens cap" problem and different options of addressing it. Otherwise I can not recommend JVC digital camera to any potential buyers non will I be one of your customers. I believe other’s on the internet having the same problem would feel the same way.

Regards, Keith

Its auto reply say a representative will contact me within five days.

I shall update this post with their reply.

Cheers

I posted another bb. but I am having the same poblem too after 1 year of owning the JVC ...95U. Since it happened suddenly without any reason, I am wondering is it wise to spend money (does anyone know how much it costs) to repair. I have also not found any soln so far. But the jvc reply to email says spend $50+. without specifying what the prob is/ how much it costs etc. Pls post/reply of any info which helps in deciding what todo with it!

this problem is just the CCD circuit, some times resold the circuit is a good idea and solution, but can be necessary change the ccd or some ceramic capacitors in the CCD circuit

Well it has been 10 days now since I email JVC and I have no reply from them at all. I have started looking for another digital video camera, but of course no more JVC brand.

I have the same problem with my GR-d60E ( Europe model). I send the same letter with the same content to JVC. Still no answer from them! My advice to the newer customers: never buy JVC product!

I can't Friggn believe this. Same thing as above. It's like the one year warranty ran out, only about three hours of recording time used.

-- David Kraft (dkraft@whatsinthere.com), January 25, 2005.

I have the same problem (Model GR-D70U) where it says Lens cap. I am planning to show it to one of the technician who is charging $20 to diagonose the problem.

Damn, I am so sorry I did not do more checks on the JVC GD-D90 camera, I have had it for about 8 months and I too get this "Lens Cap" error. This seems to be some type of manufacturers defect. Can we do some type of petition and forward to JVC.

-- TONY (seeg@trinidad.net), February 04, 2005.

Well, at least I'm not alone. I took my camera out today to use and BOOM the same problem. I've only used it a few times. Of course it's out of warranty also. What can we do about this?

-- Melanie (twhtink@yahoo.com), February 05, 2005.

I thought I was the only one had that problem. My gf had been playing with it before it broke down, I almost blamed it on her...Good thing I am not alone at this. But I guess a JVC person is not brave enough to give an answer or solution to our problem...

Hi all- you may have saved me from a costly mistake!:]

there is more of the same complaint at this upscale site: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t112089.html

and... would you believe a class action suit? http://www.pechorin.com/m/2004/04/10/JVC_GR__DVL300-211689.html IN part this site says: ...a group of almost 50 of us JVC camera owners are planning on taking JVC to court via a class-action lawsuit. If interested, I can give you more details if you email me. Basically, we all have one of some 23 camera models that show the E04 / REATTACH BATTERY / UNIT IN SAFEGUARD MODE problem, and believe this problem has been known to JVC for years and still they expect people to pay for repairs.

-- Tom Hall (thall@accn.org), February 12, 2005.

RISKY but i had the same and i took apart the camera and piece it backit went away actually havent since it since. But i did get a new eror, it asked for meto put in the cleaning cassette and i havent bought one yet, but it kinda came randomly is that normal? if anyone knows please email me directly....

-- jesse haney (calinkaos@san.rr.com), February 16, 2005.

I have a GR-D71U. I contacted JVC 3 times and they had me try to remove the battery and wait 1/2 hr and this seemed to work 1 time. This took me out of my 90 day labor warantee period. They had me try to contact a factory repair center. I phone one but never received a return call. Now they say send it in. Yeah right! how much will this one cost..
