Where did the name Embarcadero come from and what does it mean?

This name is on numerous streets on both the peninsula and in the east bay. And why did people deicde to use it as a street name?

Embarcadero is a spanish word for wharf or pier. The reason they named the streets Embarcadero is because they are (or were) close to the water.
