fixed seat canoe rowinggreenspun.com : LUSENET : Open-water rowing : One Thread |
I know there are sliding seat "rigger" inserts for canoes like mine (16'6"X33"). However, I am convinced that for my purposes, which include open salt water, I would do better with a fixed seat arrangement rather than sliding. Is there a convenient, inexpensive insert for canoe rowing that provides a useful rowlock spread, seat position relationship, foot braces, etc.? Maybe a design for building in light wood?

Paul,There are a couple of rigs on the market that accomplish your objective. I do not, however, think they utilize foot braces. Some links: http://www.marathonboat.com/canoe_accessories.htm http://www.castlecraft.com/rowing_canoe.htm and

I used adjustable foot braces from a kayak for my canoe. I didn't need any outriggers as the canoe is 40 inches wide, but you could make outriggers easily from 1/4 to 3/8 thick aluminum angle. Or you could make some out of wood as well.
