On October 4, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

St. Francis Bernadone of Assisi [baptized Giovanni (John)] [nicknamed "Francesco" (French boy), "Il Poverello" (the little poor man)] (Italian, deacon, stigmatist, founder of Order of Friars Minor [Franciscans] and of Order of Poor Ladies [Poor Clares], died at about age 45 in 1226 [canonized 1228])

Sts. Adauctus and Callisthene of Ephesus (from Asia Minor [now called Turkey], father [a martyr] and virgin daughter, 4th century)
St. Ammon the Great (Egyptian, desert monk, abbot with at least 4,000 disciples, c. 350)

St. Hierotheus (Greek, 1st century)
St. Julian Majali of Sicily [Giuliano] (Italian, Benedictine hermit and abbot, d. 1470)
Sts. Mark, Marcian, and many companions (Egyptian, martyred in 304)
St. Peter of Damascus (Syrian, bishop, tortured and martyred [beheaded] by Moslems c. 750)
St. Petronius of Byzantium (from Asia Minor, bishop of Bologna in Italy, c. 445)
St. Quintus of Tours (French, courtier, rejected advances of queen, martyred for his chastity c. 570)

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints or blesseds and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Additional information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John

["Canticle of Brother Sun" by St. Francis of Assisi]

Most High Almighty Good Lord, Yours are praise, glory, honor and all blessings; To You alone! Most High, do they belong, and no man is worthy of speaking Your Name!
Be praised, Lord, with all Your creatures, and above all our Brother Sun, who gives us the day by which You light our way, and who is beautiful, radiant and with his great splendor is a symbol to us of You, O Most High!
And be praised, Lord, for our Sister Moon and the Stars. You created them in the heavens bright, precious and beautiful!
And be praised, Lord, for our Brother the Wind and for the air and the clouds and for fair weather and for all other through which You sustain Your creatures.
And be praised, Lord, for our Sister Water, so useful, and humble, and chaste!
And be praised, my Lord, for our Brother Fire, through whom You light up the night and who is handsome, joyful, robust, and strong!
And be praised, my Lord, for our Sister, Mother Earth, who supports and carries us and produces the diverse fruits and colorful flowers and trees!
Praise and bless the Lord and give thanks to Him and serve Him with great humility!
Be praised, my Lord, for our Sister, bodily Death from whom no living man can escape!
Woe only to those who die in mortal sin; but blessed are those who have done Your most holy will; for the second death can cause them no harm!

[Note: I am copying the following several (indented) messages from the old, obsolete "saints" thread for this day of the year, so that the old thread can later be deleted. JFG]

John,

I read St. Francis of Assisi was made Saint in Church only 2 years after his death! That caught my eye when I read that! I have seen it take hundreds and hundreds of years for some Saints!

-- David -- October 09, 2001.

Just imagine what a great man St. Francis must have been, David. Even though he was so young when he died, and even though there were no modern methods of news media to spread the truth about him, his reputation for holiness was so overwhelming that his canonization could not be held back!

Prayer for the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi

O God, Who, through the merits of blessed Francis, magnifies Your church, enriching it anew with spiritual offspring: make us, like him, to disdain the goods of earth, nor at any time to lack the comforting gifts of heaven. Amen

When I read a biography about St. Francis of Assisi it brings tears to my eyes, even right now as I right. Oh how he was (as he was on earth) so filled with the spirit of God! I talk to him alot and ask him to pray for me to the Lord. He defenitly did melt my heart and oh how I wish I could have seen him back them. He has greatly strengthened my faith.

Jason, thank you for sharing your enthusiasm! I love to hear about the spiritual experiences of my fellow Christians.

The Franciscan commitment to serving those in need amazes me. In researching orders of sisters to possibly join in the future, Franciscans rank near the top. St. Francis truly must be praying fervently in heaven for all the good that is being done by Franciscans around the world.

St. Francis, pray for us.
