Dirty Hoist Ropes

Hi There, I was wondering how often if ever your local inspector writes up as a maintenance deficency that dirty hoist ropes were found on the job and ropes could not be thoroughly inspected and should be cleaned.

That white glove test sounds like a lot of inspection work, are you in Australia. What are you using to clean hoist ropes and how about gov ropes. Jim

JIM ITS HAPPENING ALL THE TIME HERE IN CHICAGO. THE INSPECTORS JOB IS MAKING SURE THE ELEVATORS ARE SAFE AND THAT UNFORTUNATELY INCLUDES CHECKING CABLES FOR DEBRIS THAT CAN CAUSE SHEAVE WEAR OR SLIP.

The inspectors here were writing up dirty ropes quite often. We had several discussions with the Chief Elevator Inspector and got them to back off a bit. The code book is specific about the things that condemn hoist ropes and I don't believe rouge is one of them. Rouge can be an indicator of under-sized ropes, though.

Wait until they start writing up the rope lube coming out of the governor ropes, claiming the ropes have been lubricated or greased. That has happened here.

I tried to have an inspector write up a set of rouged hoistropes because of the constant mess. He told me that he couldn't write them up for rouge alone, but if he found undersizing he would. Unfortunately he didnt.
