On October 19, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- "saints" and "blesseds" whose souls are now in heaven:

Holy North American Martyrs [also known as “Sts. Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf, and companions”] (French ... five Jesuit priests, one diocesan priest, and two laymen ... missionaries to the Huron Indians of North America, martyred between 1642 and 1649 [beatified 1925, canonized 1930])
----- St. Anthony Daniel of Dieppe [Antoine] (French, priest, martyred in Canada in 1648 at age 47)
----- St. Charles Garnier of Paris (French, Jesuit priest, martyred in Canada in 1649 at age 43)
----- St. Gabriel Lalemant of Paris (French, Jesuit priest, tortured for seventeen hours and martyred with St. John de Brébeuf in Canada in 1649 at age 39)
----- St. Isaac Jogues of Orléans (French, Jesuit priest, tortured by Mohawks [some fingers bitten off], martyred at present-day Auriesville, New York [tomahawked and scalped by Iroquois Indians] in 1646 at age 39)
----- St. John de Brébeuf of Condé-sur-Vire [Jean] (French, Jesuit priest, martyred [tortured to death by Iroquois] in Canada in 1649 at age 56)
----- St. John de Lalande of Dieppe [Jean] (French, layman, witnessed the death of St. Isaac Jogues, martyred [tomahawked by Iroquois] one day later at age 19 in 1646)
----- St. Noël Chabanel of Mende (French, Jesuit priest, martyred in Canada in 1649 at age 36)
----- St. René Goupil of Anjou (French, layman, first North American martyr, tortured for two months, martyred [tomahawked by Iroquois] at Auriesville at age 35 in 1642)

Bl. Agnes of Jesus Galand of Langeac (French, virgin, Dominican nun, died at age 32 in 1634 [beatified 1994])
St. Altinus of Orléans (French, missionary bishop, martyred in 4th century)
St. Aquilinus of Bayeux (French, blind hermit, bishop of Evreux, died at about age 75 in 695)
Sts. Beronigus, Pelagia, and 49 companions, of Antioch (Syrian, early martyrs)
St. Cleopatra of Derâa (Palestinian, martyred in Syria in 319)
St. Desiderius of Lonrey (French, Benedictine hermit, c. 705)
St. Eadnot of Dorchester (British, Benedictine abbot, bishop, d. 1016)
St. Ethbin of Kildare (British, monk in France, hermit in Ireland, c. 600)
St. Eusterius of Salerno (Italian, bishop, 5th century)
St. Frideswide of Oxford (British, daughter of a prince, Benedictine abbess, died at about age 85 c. 735) St. Laura of Cordova (Spanish, widow, abbess, martyred [in boiling pitch or molten lead] by Moslems in 864)
St. Lupus of Soissons (French, bishop, c. 540)
St. Peter of Alcántara [Pedro] (Spanish, nobleman, Franciscan priest and provincial, reformer, mystic, confessor of St. Teresa of Ávila, died at about age 63 in 1562 [beatified 1622, canonized 1669])
St. Philip Howard of Norfolk (English, earl, London Tower prisoner for six years under Elizabeth I, martyred [possibly by poison] at about age 38 in 1595 [beatified 1929, canonized in 1970])
Sts. Ptolomaeus and Lucius of Rome (Italian, martyred c. 165)
St. Theofrid of Carmery (French, Benedictine abbot, martyred by Moslems in 728)
Bl. Thomas Helye of Biville (French, catechist to the poor, priest, itinerant preacher, d. 1257)
St. Varus of Rome (Italian, soldier in Egypt, guard of Christian prisoners, martyred by hanging in 307)
St. Veranus of Vaucluse (French, bishop of Cavaillon, c. 590)
