We did it!!

We actually grew some harvestable sweet potatoes!!! Since I didn't think I'd be able to store them properly...I pressure-canned them. Got a grand total of seven pints!! Not very many and they were kinda small, but they taste delicious! Next year we'll double the number of slips that we plant. We only had ten this year.

Woo-hoo Marcia!! I am impressed! Every year, I plant them; every year, I get nothing. I am contemplating the sandy soil in Jessie's new yard and thinking hmmmm... She wants me to help her plant some flowers; ya think I can convince her that it's some sort of exotic ground cover?

Well that is freakin unbelievable. I've had the same luck as Polly with sweets for as long as I can remember. I grew a few in LA but the moles got most of em. Congratulations!

I thought it was freakin' unbelievable too, EM!! When we started digging up the plants all we expected to find was plain old roots...not tubers!

Polly...I think sweet potatoes would make a good ground cover. The plants we had did tend to vine and creep along the ground somewhat.

uh.. what's a sweet potato? (just kidding!) Congratulations!!! I cannot *imagine* growing them here, but since you did where you are....hmmmm!!!?????

I'll probably never be able to grow them again, Sheepish. It was just dumb luck :-)!! Since your climate is similar to mine I'm sure you could grow them there. I put the slips in the ground in mid-June and we dug them all by the middle of September. Maybe could have let them go longer...but I couldn't wait to see what was there!!
