What happened to Alexander the Great's armor?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Alexander the Great Q&A Forum : One Thread

Was it kept by the Ptolemies in Egypt in the mausoleum? I know the emperor Caligula wore the armor when he built a bridge of ship over the bay of Naple and symbolically crossed it in one of his psychotic bouts. (Where was shock therapy when you needed it?)

What looks very much like what has been described by many as the cuirass of Alexander the Great was found at the Royal tombs of the Macedonian kings at Aigai, and was one of the factors that determined that the tomb where they were located belongs to Phillip III "Arrhideos" instead of Phillip II as it was initially thought. The rest were probably kept by the Ptolemies until Caligula stole them, but it is still very uncertain of what Caligula stole some 500 years after Alexanders' death. Remember that one of the Ptolemies replaced the golden coffin of Alexander the Great with one made of glass...

I think that the armor was most likely kept with his body by the Ptolemies in Egypt, in the mausoleum. It doesn't make sense to take his armor to a separate location, unless Cassander or one of Alexander's other successors was absolutely bent on having it.

I think the armour was destroyed in a fire (but don't quote me on it)
