What is a brown scapular? I've heard of a scapular before, but I don't know what they're for and I certainly didn't know that there were various colors that mean different things.

A Brown Scapular is a highly indulgded sacramnetal of the church. It is a string of cord, which attaches two pieces of flannel. The two flannels bear an image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Scared Heart.

The brown Scapular was given by Our Lady to a saint of the Carmelite Order called St. Simon Stock in Aylesford, England in an apparition. The history may be read here from EWTN. You can also obtain good quality scapulars from here
