Morse code operator/ railroads

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I am sixty-one years old and remember talking with a man after church one sunday, who must have in his '70's in the late '40's, who told me about spending his life working as a morse code operator for one of the railroads in Oregon.

I will always remember the continuing interest he had in his craft, and because I am writing a novel, I would like to know about some well-researched books I could read about the railroads and the morse code operator, his importance to the functioning of the railroad, etc.

I am especially interested in reading any books or magazine articles written by a retired operator, or books telling the everyday experience an operator had.

Sincerely
