Its a art that started year 200 before christ. The meaning of manga in the "old japanese" means "simple"(at least it was that i readed on a art book...) The word simple was gave this art beacause of his simplessnes. The drawings of that time actually dident have any thing to do with the manga of now, thats'cause with the time it started to get more elaborated and sofisticaded. After a while, elaborating more and more this way of drawing started do be used to make comics(beacause of his simplissnes, with out forgeting about the sucsess). So, the word "manga" is alsow knowed in japan as the word meaning comics, of corse that they took and maked anime of the mangas because the drawing is much more simple than the other types. As you can see, the mangas are still in the middle of the evolution. Compare "Astro Boy"(a extremly old manga) with "Ragnarök" or "Blade of the immortal". Sry for my english(im a brasillian guy)
