What made him the most courageous has been widely discussed, but I believe most people would agree with, his belief in his divine birth and fate. Since his mother Olympias always told him that his real father was Zues he felt that he was invincible and that he had a greater destiny than to die young. So he was never afraid to face and attack an opponent. He was also well trained from a young age to become a warrior and a king. So the combination of his divine birth, destiny and training would most likely be the main reasons.

Now for his great military skill, he learned much from his father Phillip. He went on two campaigns with him and this is where he probably got most of his skill. One other thing that made his skill so great, was his natural ability to see weakness's in the enemy that presented themselves on the battle field and to react immediately to them.

I will try to look up the name of his early intsructor, who trained him in hand to hand combat.
