Democrats Segregation Deal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Anarchy 2 : One Thread

Until the mid-1960s, national Democratic Party leaders had a "sweetheart" deal with state Democrats in South Carolina to oppress African-Americans by keeping them in inferior schools and dilapidated housing, and denying them equal access to public accommodations, retiring senator Fritz Hollings, D-S.C., revealed on Sunday.

"We had a sweetheart deal with the National Democratic Party," he told CBS's "60 Minutes." "We’ll go along with all your programs if you’ll go along with our segregation."

The 83-year-old Democrat said that political pressure forced him, for instance, to vote against the confirmation of Thurgood Marshall, the first black to be nominated to the Supreme Court, saying it would have cost him his Senate seat to do otherwise. "I couldn't get re-elected," Hollings explained. "And if I had voted for him, I might as well withdraw from the race."

Though he said he felt extremely guilty about opposing Marshall, Hollings took the opportunity of his last big media interview to bash the lone black in President Bush's second Cabinet, Condoleezza Rice.

"She ought to go back to teaching Russian or whatever it was," the one-time Dixiecrat complained. "I've been in security, I've been working on intelligence. And for her to come onto the television and saying on 9/11 there was nothing specific. Nothing specific. You don't say that."

Hollings is no stranger to racial controversy. In 1993 he told reporters that African leaders then attending a Geneva trade conference seemed like cannibals.

"Rather than eat each other, they'd just come up [to Switzerland] and get a good square meal," he joked.

whats wrong with segregation? everywhere that blacks are allowed into turns to shit within a few years. Look at schools in the poor areas of anywhere in america. When those schools were just white trash or even spick etc people still got by, sure things were tough but you didnt have all this shit with gangs taking over and kids bringin guns etc. Now those schools are almost as dangerous as prison, all thanks to 'my niggaz'. Yo 'sup.

"everywhere that blacks are allowed into turns to shit within a few years"

Somewhat true, but in California its the Mexican illegal immigrants and the ghetto-type blacks and whites who run down neighborhoods. I dont think that segregation is the answer, I think that socioeconomic boundaries are far more effective. I prefer not to live or go to the lower socioeconomic areas, and so I dont have to deal with those types of people (of all races). I think you'll find that lower class people cause areas to "go to shit" because of their lack of refinement and personal pride. That has little to do with race and everything to do with environment. The type of black who would be shopping for a home in Palos Verdes Estates where I live (home starting prices 800K and up) is not likely to make the neighborhood "go to shit".

Why is it that these "blacks are inferior" theories are formulated by lower class whites? I wonder what those whites would do if they heard the theories attempting to explain white racism and lower class whites, as seen by ruling class whites and upper class non- whites. Some of you would find them most interesting.

There was a reason people got so radical in the 60's: pretty much all of the elected leaders were completely full of shit. Despite all the rhetoric, minorities were still getting the shaft, people were still dying in Vietnam, and protesters were still being brutalized. The Democrats didn't do shit to stop it, the Republicans didn't do shit to stop it. Every time a leader came along that wanted to actualy **change** things, he wound up dead (of course those were all isolated incidents...uh-huh...). So finaly, people got fed up, and started going ape shit. That's how we got Abbie Hoffman and the Yippies. That's how we got the Weathermen. That's how we got the Black Panthers. That's why african americans all across the country rioted when Martin Luther King was killed (by a lone nut, of course). Was it right? No. But the government can only fuck with the people for so long before people fuck back.

That was the 60's. This is now. Now we've got a new war, with new soldiers getting killed for a new made-up cause. We've got new problems and new leaders that are completely full of shit. Once again, the Democratic Party is looking increasingly like the Republicans (and vice-versa). Once again, none of our leaders are fighting for real change (or rather, real change that doesn't suck). Will history repeat itself?

I kind of wish the 60's would come back. We have piss tests so we all can't just smoke dope and give the finger to the establishment. The media is run by the ultra rich and they know how to form our opinions and keep us isolated(proof is bush being re-elected). All of Bush's economic policies will start biting us in the ass around the beginning of the baby boomers retiring. I wish we would have the 60's again. We have so many camereas and video we will find out the assasins if it gets as bad. there is no unity in this country. Nobody gives a flying F*ck about anybody but themselves and that is how the government wants us. I like politicians who will say what they really feel. An 83 year old is allowed to be different than the way we were programmed. Yesterday's dixiecrats are today's republicans. politicians bow down to the will of the people. I grew up on air force officer base housing in the 60's and I never saw racism. I wish I could have gone to the south to see an all white resturaunt. It blows me away that happened in my lifetime. Not the politicians fault. It was the people's fault.

The 60's CAN come back though. Quit your job, smoke pot and protest in the grubbiest clothes you can find. Encourage everyone else you know to do so also, and most importantly, get your 18 year old college kids who've never had a job to do the same. By an old vw van and live in it.

You can do it, don't get stuck in an anxiety bag over what you're going to do next year or where you are going to live. Too paraphrase today's young people, "it's all groovy."

Say "Fuck the System" in other ways... civil disobediance is almost always a good thing, i feel. The more high profile your target and flamboyant your actions the more people will take notice of your issue.

"Say "Fuck the System" in other ways... civil disobediance is almost always a good thing, i feel"

I disagree. If you want change, you have to WORK at it. That means organizing your group of like-minded individuals, making a plan, and clearly stating your goals. Going out there with a protest sign and a catchy chant isnt going to change a damn thing. Civil disobedience will do nothing but put you in jail, and your record will permanently show that you are a "political dissident". That tag carries a lot of weight. I grew up in the 1960s myself!

TO BAZOOKA JOE:

"The 60's CAN come back though. Quit your job, smoke pot and protest in the grubbiest clothes you can find. Encourage everyone else you know to do so also, and most importantly, get your 18 year old college kids who've never had a job to do the same. By an old vw van and live in it."

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! You are so right. AHAHAHAHAHA.

Hitler was a "political dissident" but he still got what he wanted a few years after his failed revolution atempt. Though I wouldnt go about it like he did.. but he did have loyal followers and did like you said (with the addition of killing opponents).

-- Dick Tator (inneedofliberty@yahoo.com), December 15, 2004.

I agree with Tator. Civil dissobediance works. I mean yeah, you also need to vote, write to your Senators and Congressmen, and work within the system, but sometimes you just need to take to the streets. If Martin Luther King had spent the 60's writing letters to his Senator, civil rights wouldn't have happened. Blacks had to sit in the street and sing "We shall overcome". If people had sat at home and "worked within the system" while their sons and borhters were being shipped off to Vietnam, we'd probably still be in there. The system didn't do shit. People had to get in their face- in Chicago, at Kent State, and all across the country- and demand change. Just last year, when the Prime Minister of Georgia rigged the election and siezed power, the Georgian people took action. They poured out into the streets, in one of the largest simultaneous, unplanned protests ever. They stormed the parliament building, not with guns, but with roses, and simply handed everybody a flower. Kind of fruity, but it worked. The Prime Minister resigned and free elections were held. Where would Georgia be if they had followed KOBE's plan, and "worked within the system"?

Where do you think George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would be if they "worked within the system"? They'd probably still be hanging somewhere.

-- Anti-bush (Comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), December 15, 2004.

How can you work within the System if the people you want to change, the bad people who want to screw everyone for personal gain, are incharge of that system? What then, KOBE?

-- Dick Tator (inneedofliberty@yahoo.com), December 15, 2004.

Well maybe God wants Bush to be president so "us people" get so fed up and change the government, press, and turn the oil companies into the people's oil company but oh we have been programmed against socialism so if we take our air waves and our oil we will be labled socialist. Buzzwords suck!

-- Bill F'N Brasky (brasky@freenews.com), December 15, 2004.

What socialist country would you rather live in than the U.S.?

In a way we have socialized medicine for all us ham n eggers that can get health care but we still get raked over the coals premium wise. We do not have control of the airwaves. The fundamentalist and ultra rich do. The ultra rich also have our resourses(oil, coal, gas and now farms)I would like capitalism if the ultra rich did not gobble up everything. We will probably be socialist in 10 years thanks to the greed. What a concept. We are socialist and russia is democratic.

"How can you work within the System if the people you want to change, the bad people who want to screw everyone for personal gain, are incharge of that system? What then, KOBE?"

You have to put it in perspective. As time goes on, and only if you are alert and observant, you can see what the "system" is, and how it works. Once you know that, you can win. Its like any game. You learn the rules, lose a few, and finally you learn how to WIN at the game. You play it every day of your life, and you are also a game piece on OTHER people's boards. You cannot escape the game, you can only find "safe zones" where all of the rules do not apply. In those safe zones, you learn about other rules in the game. It would take too long to explain it here.

"bad people who want to screw everyone for personal gain"

Actually, that's pretty much the behavior of all of us for our first two years of life.

-- KOBE SBM (kobesbm@kobehq.com), December 19, 2004.

Now I see the fundamental difference between us, KOBE. You see life as a competition, where your only goal is to "beat" everybody else. Nobody wins when you play like that, man. I see life more as one giant three legged race. Sure, you gotta try hard, but you also have to help your teammate, in this case the rest of humanity, make it as well. We're all one people. The human race is a giant chain, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

-- Anti-Bush (comrade_bleh@hotmail.com), December 20, 2004.

I agree with that about us all being in it together and such, but reality is much more complex than that. The "game" has been in place since human existence. Its the game of "identify all of the valuable resources and control them". The only things which have changed are what resources are considered "valuable" and the methods used to control them. The game is as simple as two fishermen on a lake, each protecting his "fishing spot". You cannot explain it on a message board, and those of you who are over 40 can understand what Im saying.

Im always gonna help my teammate, but Im always gonna make sure that my enemies are kept at bay. My enemies are those who would attempt to FORCE the strong to support the weak, who would ignore the responsibility of leadership, and who would destroy what others before us have built.

-- KOBE SBM (kobesbm@kobehq.com), December 22, 2004.

HUMANITY IS YOUR TEAMMATE, YOU COLD SON OF A BITCH! Weak or strong, they all bleed red. This "shoot the straglers" mentality just makes me sick. Perhaps I speak with an inherent bias, having a little brother with a virtual schmorgasbord (sp?) of learning disabilities and other problems, or having seen close relatives struggle with addiction to drugs or alcohol...but the thought of simply saying "fuck 'em, it's survival of the fittest" just seems...repulsive. What I have to wonder is what has happened in your life to make you such a cold, bitter person?
