Over the past few years Hanoi has made a concerted attempt to woo Viet Kieu and encourage them to bring their capital and professional skills back home.

HANOI -- Overseas Vietnamese, or "Viet Kieu," sent nearly 3.8 billion dollars to relatives and friends in the communist nation this year, up 45 percent from 2003, a central bank official said Friday.

"The money is good for their relatives to improve their standard of living ... but is also very good for the Vietnamese State's reserves in foreign currencies," the official said

Last year, the central bank said more than 90 percent of the 2.6 billion dollars sent in 2003 were transferred via commercial banks and money transfer agencies from the United States, France, Canada and Australia.

A very significant amount not recorded in the official figure is also believed to have been sent through unofficial channels.

There are more than 2.7 million Viet Kieu, of whom 1.3 million reside in the United States. Many left their homeland for the West following the end of French colonial rule in 1954 and at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

Over the past few years Hanoi has made a concerted attempt to woo Viet Kieu and encourage them to bring their capital and professional skills back home.

Authorities believe about 380,000 of them will visit the country on the occasion of the coming Tet holiday, the traditional Lunar new year, an increase of 10-15 percent over last year.
