Tsunami Donations from Catholic church

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

The Catholic Church is one of the wealthiest organisations in the world, how much of the organisations OWN wealth (not new donations from its followers) is being donated to the Tsunami victims?

What? the Catholic Church is wealthy? Never heard that one before.

Bump for comment.

The Vatican bank scandal at the time of the murder of John Paul I showed large investments all over the world. However that should have nothing to do with our own personal charity. We all have to help now, no matter how little we can afford to give.

-- A (A@A.com), December 30, 2004.

the catholic church is the single largest non governmental charity organization. everything the church owns is given by the charity of its members, the only investments or "wealth" the church has is by its members donations. there is nothing that the church could give that would not be from its members own charity. WE are the body of the church, after all. as to the catholic church's wealth, it is NOT so vast as most people think. certainly SOME of the art in the vatican could be sold, though most of the artworks are mosaics that can't be moved and selling the rest would be bankrupting human history... i mean, who really wants to take david or the pieta from people? other than art, the investments of the church cover huge operating costs. the church is more than 1 billion members strong, and maintaining a clergy, support staff, and schools for all those people gets very pricey very fast. That doesnt even account for covering missions, the normal charity that the catholic church provides, and much more.

why doesnt the catholic church provide from its stores instead of from its charity? probably for the same reason that america doesnt sell all the national parks and governmental buildings for land and housing to the public when there are BETTER ways of doing it. The current assets of the church are not liquid.

Anita,

The short version is "why don't you sell your house for the Tsunami victims"? Many institutions have a lot of wealth, and they operate off the interests it generates. That way there is something left for the NEXT disaster that shows up. Why not start your criticism by showing us what private organizations are giving more than the Catholic church? That would lend some validity to your "question". Catholic charities was the first organization I heard about giving anything.

First off: I know that our Parish was asked for donations for the Florida Flood Victims. But then I live in the States.

I don't know if they're going to make any specific requests for charity donations as well. (we usually take a week or two to get all that sort of information spread around and passed on to us by our priest at Sunday Mass.)

Secondly: Since you're worried about donations for Tsunami Relief. Why not actually INCLUDE any information?

FOR THE US (AND I BELIEVE CANADA): In response to the recent devastation in Southern Asia, concerned musicians and fans along with the American Red Cross have formed Music For Relief. All donations go directly to aid the victims and their families.

You can help those affected by this crisis by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund which provides supplies, medicine, and shelter to those in need.

Donate through the American Red Cross' Web site: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

OR by phoning: 1-800-HELP-NOW. When you call, be sure to press option #2 and tell the representative that you called because of Music for Relief.

If you would like to make a donation by mail, send a check to:f

Make checks payable to American Red Cross International Response Fund

and in the Memo write MUSIC FOR RELIEF - Tsunami

To get involved with Music For Relief, please send an email to info@musicforrelief.org

FOR ANY READERS IN THE UK GO HERE TO FIND OUT MORE: www.dec.org.uk

As for any other Country, if you check online you should be able to let us know what charities are donating to the Tsunami Relief Fund.

This is not an answer...only an observation. It is interesting how quick the Catholic Church is to deflect the question. I for one would like to know how much the churc donated. After the pope called for all nations to donate as much as they could, why would he make a public disclosure on how much the church itself donated. And don't come up with the lame excuse that the church gets by on donations from its members...the Catholic church is the one of the richest and most powerful organizations the world has ever known. What I say...put up or shut up.

-- Kim (nkstitt@sympatico.ca), January 25, 2005.

and i'd like to know how much of the donated money the RCC is going to keep and how much percent the state gets

anyway, with this tsunami disaster everybody suddenly started to care about their fellow men...but every day there die people in africa, asia, south america ...etc and no one cares and no one gives a ****;the wealthy countries ask even these poor countries to pay back their debts, not to speak about help

i guess organised charity is also about getting big money,oh yeah sure the people also get something, but that doesn't change their situation, instead of dying of hunger, they live for some more years, have too many children, too little food again, hunger again,etc...

charity can't change a thing when a whole system doesn't work...

our wealth is built on the 3rd world poverty...

-- sdqa (sdqa@sdqa.com), January 25, 2005.

sdqa,

Why don't YOU help the poor by selling your computer and donating the proceeds to charity? Also, rather than waste your time here on the internet, go volunteer at a soup kitchen or something.

Frank

-- Someone (ChimingIn@twocents.cam), January 25, 2005.

Kim

Keep in mind that this is simply a private discussion forum. It is not the Catholic Church. Why would you suspect that any one of us knows the percentages and financials? Everyone has different interests. Decimal points do nothing for me.

Call Catholic Charities and ask them. They may send you an annual report. Its not a secret. Do some investigating and let us know what you find out.

-- Jim (furst@flash.net), January 25, 2005.

Sdqa, I think u should stop taking pot-shots at the Catholic church all the time. I have yet to see anything substantial coming from you. What is your purpose for frequenting this site?

-- Oliver Fischer (spicenut@excite.com), January 25, 2005.

what did i say wrong now again?

that the RCC also keeps a part of the donated money, but this is true, the state also, every other organisation also, there are also taxes on your donations etc...

i just want to say that i don't believe much in the good intentions of everyone that is trying to help, sure there are people among the donaters and organisators that really care, but i 'll say it again;every minute someone dies and NOBODY GIVES A ****;...and now this tsunami disaster happened and everyone suddenly starts to care...if the media wasen't involved in this so big,i really doubt that there would be SO much donators

-- sdqa (sdqa@sdqa.com), January 26, 2005.

Cmon sdqa, hundreds of thousands of people dying in a single day doesn't happen too often. Its big news, deal with it. I doubt if the tsunami victims mind if incessant news of the event garnered more money than would otherwise have been donated. Why do you?

-- Brian Crane (brian.crane@cranemills.com), January 26, 2005.

every minute someone dies...

-- sdqa (sdqa@sdqa.com), January 27, 2005.

And what are you doing about it sdqa?
