Are you related to the Rodriguez girl from Mission that recently passed away? The one in the car accident from January the 3rd.

Hi David.

No. There isn't any family relationship as far as I know.

Oh ok, just wondering. Because I saw a guy at the funeral that kind of looked like you.

-- David Ortiz (cyberpunk1986@hotmail.com), January 05, 2005.

I often wonder what would happen if we ever bump into each other in public. Would it be like Hans Solo and Darth Vader or Yoda and Jar-Jar Binks?

-- rod (elreyrod@yahoo.com), January 05, 2005.

Actually, I think it may be more like Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo. Me being Hans, of course.

I think you'd probably recognize me first. You once sent me a website that had your picture in it. what was the link?

yea...the guy did kind of look like you..but he had a hook-hand, which made me think it wasn't you because you never mentioned anything like that.

You play accordian too? If you get to B'more we'll have to jam on some blues changes. Haven't played along with an accordian before. Its got to have a different feel---

-- Jim (furst@flash.net), January 05, 2005.

Hi Jim.

Different feel? Just think German Accordian, Jazz Progressions, and Mexican Revolution all bunched up into one style of music. Then it becomes Acordeón Music. But, I'm really not that good of an acordeon player; I get by with some old traditional mexican standards. I'm not your acrobatic acordianist virtuoso like I wish I could be. I do play a mean sax, though.

Is that how you spell accordian? Thought I had that one right. Or is it a Mexican spelling? I'm constantly embarassed at my spelling skills. Play trumpet much better.

-- Jim (furst@flash.net), January 05, 2005.

Rod

By the way, since we are truely off track---

Have you ever heard of Jamie Abersold? He puts out Jazz records with some of the best players out there, and leave a spot for you to play.

All the standards--- you can turn off the piano and substitute accordian, or just play along with the sax. Fantastic. If you read, books are provided. Really keeps your chops in shape! Highly recomended and he has tons of recordings to play with, Kind of like Karioki. (No idea how to spell that last word.)

Yup, Abersol. My college roommate had a few of those in LP format. He too was a trumpet player. I would jam on a few easy tracks. I had a hard time following the chord progressions, so I'd resort to playing by ear.

Yup, you spelled "accordian" correctly; I spelled it in spanish--"acordeon". I have seen it spelled "accordion", too. Anyways,

We get Winter Texans down here from the North. I played a few gigs with a piano style accordian; they liked it and danced to it. I used the same accordian with the natives around here; they just sat there and gave me this real unhappy glare. So, I very quickly switched to the button style accordian. The crowd started dancing like there was no tomorrow. Funny how a musical instrument can make such an impact on a culture. Some crowds prefer the Hohner accordian while others must have their Gabinelli accordian, but down here it just has to have buttons instead of piano keys. Yeah, "acordeon".

I meant to mention...

We get Canadiens, Canadians, French Canadians, German descendents, and plain ol'music lovers. The mexican acordeon stuff is loved by just about everybody down here. The style I'm talking about is called Musica Norteña, or Mexico-Texas border music. It has a lot of German polka and Mexican Revolutionary period styles. The band I'm with (going on 10 years now) plays that old Norteña style. We don't play the modern "Tejano" stuff. It isn't even Texan music; it is actually Musica Tropical, or music from the hispanic tropics. Somehow it became Tejano....go figure?!

I played a gig one time with two opposing groups--Northern Tourists and French Canadians. The two groups sat very apart from each other. I don't know the circumstances about that situation, but it was obvious the two were not on talking terms. As soon as the acordeon came out, the floor was mixed with dancers. Uh huh, the power of music. Anyways, here is this little Texas band making chit-chat with Minnesota-Wisconsin-Illinois dialects and peculiar French dialects mixed with slightly broken English dialects. Cool!

I don't want to give the impression that my band is strictly a Mexican Music kind of band. We play variety: country, soft rock, 70's pop (yes, they like that), and whatever we think they'll like or ask for. I wish it were jazz (as if I were competant enough to make it sound right) and more blues (my favorites), but we're a dance band.

In Baltimore, there is a thriving Latino community. In fact Fells Point, where I live is sort of the epi-center. "Salsa" music a term many people from around here use to describe a variety of music, is very much enjoyed by everyone. Very popular! All of the bands have different sounds and feels.

I love Salsa music. Too bad it isn't popular down here :(

Any idea about what the above means?

-- Jim (furst@flash.net), January 07, 2005.

Ever since kindergarten I've had people always wanting to corner me into a fight--every first day of school. I guess I'm an easy target. I still get into little squirmishes even today. The above is just another one of those things. I have no idea what was posted before it got censored.

I love this forum!!
