Why is the church referred to as a "mother?"

Considering the fact that the church is the bride of Christ, why do some people refer to the church as a mother? Since Christ is married to the church and we ARE the church, can someone explain the mother aspect?

The Church is called our mother because, like a mother, the Apostles and their successors, together with all the faithful, are given us by God to guide, teach, protect, rule, serve and love us.
