greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I recently heard of a Third Order Priest. I do not exaclty know what they are. A thrid order, it has been explaiend ot me, is an order that operates with affiliation ot an order iwht rleigiosu life, but the members are laypersons. Thus, I am not sure what a third Order Proest woiudl do.

Can they Celebrate Mass? Can they give sermons? Can they excersise Preistly functions? if not, why not, and what can hey do, and what is there purpose?

Never heard of it. As far as I know, first order are priests, second order are religious brothers and sisters, and third order are laypersons.

Response to THIRD ORDER PREISTS

ZAROVE--- Here is a link which will give you a general concept of the Third Orders.

If I recall in some detail (modern day) if at any time the Church would for any reason fully collapse due to governments, corrupt teaching, these people would step in to continue to fullfill it mission and begin to rebuild/restore the Church and it's Teachings.

Zarove

Third Orders are not only for lay persons. Secular clergy may also be members.

Also, you can be third order-regular (as opposed to third order regular)which means that you are professed religious and live in community.

The pope I beleive is a secular carmelite.

Response to THIRD ORDER PREISTS

Really the way your are usint the term "third order priest" is confusing matters.

Think of it as a priest who is a member of a third order. They are absolutely no different to any other priest except that they are members of a third order.
