Response to JAKE, THIRD ORDER QUESTSOION

I assist at Mass at a chapel of the Society of St Pius X, and thanks be to God. As Emerald has correctly pointed out, the SSPX is a priestly society. There are no secret bloodletting pin-the-tail-on- the-Archbishop rituals that elevate laypeople to its membership rolls, unless you want to count its Third Order, to which I plan to be professed, with the grace of God, this Spring.

Response to JAKE, THIRD ORDER QUESTSOION

Many religious congregations (Carmelites, Domicians, Franciscans) have Third Orders. Third Orders are for laity or religious who have an attachment to the spirituality of a particular religious order, and want to share in their prayers & good works. There is a Rule that Third Order members live by, though it is not binding under sin.

Although a priest can be a member of a Third Order (I believe the Pope is a Third Order Carmelite, St Rose & St. Catherine of Siena were Third Order Dominicans), there is no such thing as a Third Order priest, per se.

You can read more about the Third Order of the Society of St Pius X here.

From what I understand the third order of SSPX is not recognised by the Vatican

Response to JAKE, THIRD ORDER QUESTSOION

There isn't much going in & with the SSPX that the Modernist Vatican would/could recognize.

Response to JAKE, THIRD ORDER QUESTSOION

It is good that the Vatican does not recognize SSPX. That would mean that SSPX had become heretics.

I am not having a dig at the SSPX. Although I do not adhere to their cause, I have on occassion attended their masses as an act of unity.

I was simply refering to the status of their third order. I don't know for certain if I am correct, however in a recent letter from the Vatican, it makes reference to the fact that there are no lay members of the SSPX. However a third order is not merely an association, it is membership of an order and therefore it would have lay members.

Don't know if you are in a better position to advise.

I wonder what the author of the same document would say if you asked him if my profession in the Third Order would constitute "formal adherance" to the "schism," and bring down upon my head the grave penalty of excomunication. The Novus Ordos all seem to hold the theological opinion that it does, as if they don't consider me excomunicated anyway.

I mean, membership in a group that to them does not exist shouldn't affect my standing as a Catholic, by their own criteria.

Cardinal Ratzinger:

"In the strict sense there are no "lay members" of the Society of St. Pius X, only those who frequent their Masses and receive the sacraments from them."

Perhaps they are not aware of a third order?

Would be interesting to investigate further.
