HANOI (AFP) - The leader of Vietnam's communist party said his party made mistakes that caused a socio-economic crisis after the fall of Saigon in 1975.

"After the liberation of south Vietnam, the CPV made some mistakes resulting in a serious socio-economic crisis for the country," Nong Duc Manh said at a ceremony to mark the Communist Party of Vietnam's 75th anniversary in Hanoi.

In the aftermath of the war that ended when North Vietnamese troops entered Saigon in 1975, the country's economy teetered on the brink of collapse in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In 1986, the communist party decided to begin the country's transition to a market economy.

In his statement, Manh also blamed some party members for bureaucracy and corruption while accusing "hostile forces" of undermining Vietnam's revolution.

"Not a small group of CPV members are morally degraded, bureaucratic and corrupted while hostile forces have always tried to use the peaceful evolution as well as violence to fight and overthrow the party," he said.

CPV controls all political, socio-economic and cultural activities in the country.

The official day recalled by historians as the party's foundation by President Ho Chi Minh is February 3.

Manh insisted "Vietnam is determined to follow socialism while the party plays a decisive role in leading the country's revolution to any victory."
