Has anyone else heard about this? My SIL gave me a newspaper that had an article about it and I researched it further. Wonder if they can really ban the sale of natural vitamins and herbs!!

Yes they can. If not under the legislation thats been being introduced since the increased popularity of "dietary suppliments", then they can regulate it under FDA toxicity levels of agricultural products. Given time, many more herbs will be moved under control of the DEA as marijuana is now.

Oh forgot. Since all the methaphetamine craze, the herb ephedria has been moved under FDA / DEA regulation or is in the process of being controlled.

This has been going on for years. I signed a petition about 4 years ago.

Ľou're right, Dee, it has been going on for years. Unfortunately the bastards will keep on keepin on forever, because the drug companies dont want any competition, especially when it works and has no deadly side effect like their stinkin drugs. Democracy is hard work, like relationships, and we all have to keep fighting while we draw breath, for the sake of those who come after us, should we survive that long as a species.

From what I've read, since the U.S. belongs to the World Trade Organization, this country is "obliged" to make sure our laws don't conflict with theirs...or any other organization they're a member of. One of their newest ideas is to try to regulate natural supplements which has already happened in a few other countries. What makes me nervous is the fact that the meetings to pass this law (one in Bonne, Germany and one in Rome) are supposed to happen by August of this year. And if they can get this stupid law passed the drug companies are gonna make a killing!!! I just read the most recent article and supposedly there is growing opposition to this whole thing now that more people are finding out about it.

Just in case, though, I'm stocking up on a few supplements...especially my chromium picolinate!

Marcia, what do you mean by the drug companies will make a killing, you mean if the govt starts regulating herbs/supplements? How so?

EM...According to what I've been reading, if this law is passed supplements such as chromium picolinate, lysine, selenium, vitamin E & C and several others will be available over the counter ONLY as dictated by the minimum RDA. Anything higher than the minimun RDA will be available as a supplement prescription. We all know that the "minimun RDA" doesn't help most folks!! Hell...even the valarian and St. John's Wort that grows wild in my backyard will be illegal. So drug companies...and the doctors that prescribe the supplements...will make out quite well if this law passes.

This is what I've been reading, EM. If you have any other info that will put my mind at ease...please let me know! As far as I'm concerned, NO part of ANY government has ANY right to tell ME what I can do to help MY body heal or feel any better :-)!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I agree on the government interference part for sure; the only way I would want them involved at all is to certify that what is on the label is accurate, as to potency and purity. I know too that many European countries regulate herbs and supplements and they are prescribed by docs, which is distasteful on the one hand cuz it interferes with our freedom to make our own choices, but also speaks to the medical community's knowledge of natural supplements/herbs compared to here, where docs are clueless by design. I also have always been under the impression that compared to herbs and supplements, drugs are so many gazillion times more profitable that the drug companies wouldnt be in the least interested in marketing them. Of course if they were made prescription only and the drug companies took control of their manufacture, they could charge whatever the hell they want, greedy bastards that they are.

I agree with Em about the purity and potientcy. So many times I hear about companies testing a product and it is not pure or only has a small amount of the % listed. Of course, that is coming from companies that are trying to get you to buy from them. I usually by from Twin Labs but I heard they were bought out by someone and not as good. All well.
