Did Freud based his whole theory on only 12 cases?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : History & Theory of Psychology : One Thread

Hello, I was wondering if it is true that Freud based his full theory in the examination of only 12 cases. This is something I have heard from the humanistic psychology community, but I haven't been able to find a reliable source that confirms it. Also, there are studies that say cognitive-behavioral therapy and person-centered therapy are ones of the most effectives ways of treatment. Is there any kind of study that shows the effectiveness of psychoanalysis? I appreciate your help. Luis

I remember reading that Freud treated many many women, plus he also examined himself.
