dubs are voice over while subs are subtitled. i usually try and get dubs because i'd rather concentrate on watching the show rather than reading the script.

Yes but 90% of the time dubs suck ass. Some are good but yeah...

If I can't get something subbed I just get it raw and try to go on it with the amount of Japanese I know so yeah...It's all a matter of prefference.

i wish i knew japanese

I hate it when people say 'I wish I knew Japanese'. Just get off your butt and try to learn it! I will tell you now that I DON'T know it, but I AM researching it, so I AM trying to do something about that.

Anyway, subs ARE better than dubs. Think of your favorite brand of food...is the ripoff brand that is cheaper as good? Hell no! It sucks! Then you wind up running back to the store and getting the original because it's the only thing that works. It's the same here...subs are the original, so they are the best. Period.

let's not get close-minded here.

I agree. There are some very good dubs. I would never go as far to say a dub is better than the original because it's simply not true but some dubs are very close if not equal in quality to the Japanese versions.

But unfortunately that's not many. Most dubs suck ass for the main reason that companies bastardize the Anime for the sole purpose of profit and merchandising, etc. They treat them like regular cartoons in terms of voice acting and re-doing the music, etc., where as in Japan they view Anime as any other piece of quality entertainment and don't try to dumb down their audience, which is why Anime is a beautiful piece of art.

And that's not even getting on the subject of censorship and targeting mature Anime to children as often that is the case...But I don't wanna start a rant so yeah...

I hate it when people say "subs ARE better than dubs". Acctually, you can't compare the two for content, because theoretically they are the same. A "dub job" is supposed to be a translation. The only reason you may think subs are "better" are because they are the original source. A "sucky dub" is the result of fat-bald-rich-men and their greedy companies that re-hash a good anime series and turn it into @#&$^! *cough* 4Kids *cough* Funimation cough*

Think of how manga is translated. A "good" translator doesn't edit the images or the dialogue, and simply translates it into a language that is understandable by broader audiences. For example, if an original novel was "better" than a translated one then that would mean a 'Harry Potter' book in English was "better" than a translated version (such as Chinese or Spanish). I'm sorry but that's not true since theoretically they are the same.

Now back to the subject of anime. Sure, there are companies that screw with anime, but there are also companies that do a GOOD job too. There are plenty of good dubs. Have you ever watched Gundam Wing or Cowboy Bebop dubs? Or how abt the many Akira dubs (especially the Pioneer one). Now THOSE are good dub jobs.

Also, what SG2 said was true: A dub is NOT better than an original. In time, however, i hope the majority of dubs will increase in quality so people OTHER than those that speak Japanese can appreciate anime.

ps. some people don't have the time to learn japanese; i'm one of them
